The ”Viennale” is Austria’s largest International Film Festival taking place every year since 1960. This year Vienna will be the host of the forty-eightieth ”Viennale” starting on October 21, 2010. ”Viennale” is the official member of “International Federation of Film Producers Associations” (FIAPF) and non-competitive film festival and its main audience are ordinary people.

In addition, each year about 300 documentaries and short films as well – called ” Viennale”- are released in theatres in Vienna.

The International Film Festival ”Viennale” hosts new movies in all genres and styles. In fact, during ” Viennale” it is possible for about 90 thousand spectators in Vienna to watch movies from all over the world. ”Viennale” is very popular. People travels to Vienna from different countries to participate in this film festival. There are also about 700 official guests among participants; Directors, actors and other professionals in filmmaking including film companies, film producers and media representatives as well as, investors, reporters and writers in film industry, participate in ”Viennale”.

One of the unique programs during the the Vienna International Film Festival ”Viennale” held in cooperation with the ”Austrian Film Museum” (Österreichisches Filmmuseum), is a Memorial Tribute to the life of prominent figures is the film industry. An Hommage to the life and works of ”Éric Rohmer”, the French prominent ”nouvelle vague” director who passed away in January 2010 in Paris, is the subject of the Retrospective Memorial in ”Viennale” this year. In October and November every year, introducing and screening old films, selected from the history of cinema as well as films from previous ”Viennale”, transform Vienna to the city of Film and Cinema.

An Homage to the life and works of ”Éric Rohmer”, the French prominent ”nouvelle vague” director who passed away in January 2010 in Paris, is the subject of the Retrospective Memorial in ”Viennale” this year.

Even though ”Viennale” is a non-competitive film festival, but is admitted to accord awards from ”The International Federation of Film Critics and Film Journalists” (FIPRESCI). “Vienna Film Prize” (Wiener Filmpreis) granted to the best Austrian produced film last year, is alleged in this festival also. Nevertheless this award in 2008 was bestowed to the film ”For a moment of freedom” (Ein Augenblick Freiheit), the first film of ”Arash Riahi”, Iranian director. The ”Audience Award for Best Film” at the Standard newspaper called «STANDARD-Publikumsjury» is acknowledged to one of the films participating in ”Viennale” that has not received any prize in Austria so far.

In Vienna Film Festival, in addition to screening movies, documentaries and short films, other activities are held that diversify and expand the range of ”Viennale” ‘s audience. Public dialogue with professionals of the film industry, including directors and other official guests of the festival, exhibitions, book introductions, and implementation of several concerts, are other goings-on of Vienna film festival, ”Viennale” each year.
